CLEVELAND ISD POLOCE RESPOND TO STUDENT WITH POSSIBLE WEAPON

CHIEF EVANS /CLEVELAND ISD PD

Earlier today we (CISD Police) received a call in reference to a student who possibly had some type of weapon on our Eastside School campus.

CISD Police Officers and I responded. Upon our arrival we quickly determined, what was initially thought to have been a semi-automatic pistol was in fact a plastic replica capable of firing plastic pellets. There was an affixed, operational “red-dot” laser underneath the barrel of this said replica.

This replica is made to look extremely like, if not exactly like, a Beretta 9mm Semi-automatic pistol. The additional items (bottles of more pellets) were not visible to other students, thus many were fearful this was in fact, a real handgun. All be it, like I said, it was a pellet gun.

The problem with a pellet gun, specifically inside of a confined space, such as a school bus, hallway, bathroom or classroom is this; {Pellets are designed to travel at subsonic speeds. High velocities can cause light pellets to overly deform, or even break apart in flight. The transition from subsonic to supersonic velocities will cause almost all pellets to tumble. The closer a pellet gets to the speed of sound, the more unstable it becomes.}

Our students, did exactly what we, as parents and educators, would have hoped they’d do. These students immediately notified a Teacher who in turn, notified Eastside Administrators who called for CISD Police. Within moments of the first report by a student to a Teacher, this individual responsible for bringing these items in a backpack to school was separated from the rest of the students and brought to the CISD Police Station.

Like I had mentioned in an earlier post on this page, PLEASE…I am recommending and advising parents, unless absolutely necessary for some specific project or reason, please refrain from sending bags or back packs to school.

Also, PLEASE—PLEASE talk with (not at) your kids about this tragic and serious, series of events happening not just across our country, but just down the freeway from us in neighboring Santa Fe. PLEASE talk with them and tell them, violence is NOT the answer. Pulling the trigger of a gun is absolute and final. One can never, ever, take back a bullet, when fired. There are no “Take Backs” when it comes to violence.

Even toys guns, replica guns, pellet or BB guns….No school, school bus stop, school bus, is the place for these items. NO kinds of weapon, whether real or fake, bullet or blade has any place at any school, any where at anytime.

Friends, if we don’t step up and do whatever it takes, whatever we have to, to protect our kids, then who will? This problem is an ALL OF US kinda problem. It’ll take all of us to solve it. Together.

It really comes down to this….Are we really OK, with being known as;

“That generation that failed their kids on school violence?”

Rex
