The student who was struck by the truck on Tuesday morning, November 2nd, 2021 on Houston St. at Charles Barker has been released from the hospital and on the journey to hopefully make a full recovery. It appeared to be a low-speed crash “thank goodness”. Motorists are all always encouraged to be watchful when driving in school zones when warning lights are activated. Investigators are still looking into this accident and the elderly driver of the truck is “very remorseful this accident even occurred”. Investigators and patrol officers are still reviewing evidence; this crash is under further investigation, and, or pending whether any charges will be filed. The area is always congested with pedestrians and students crossing the roadway to get to and from school. There are no sidewalks in this area; which increases the chances of young students walking along the edge of the roadway. Further west on Houston St. last week an elderly gentleman who was riding his motorized wheelchair was hit by a passing vehicle. I’m aware that City and School Officials, Tx-DOT, and many stakeholders: “meaning all the parents and guardians of the students who attend school, or extracurricular events at the nearby campuses or stadium” have been studying and trying to come up with a solution to enhance the safety along this eastern stretch of Houston St.
