Cold weather blows

EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY – Icy winds that blew threw Porter around 7 p.m. on Sunday, proved far stronger than anticipated when they lifted a rose vendor’s tent off of the ground and into overhead power lines.

The tent, in the parking lot of the Kroger grocery story on the corner of FM 1314 and US 59, was anchored by several 55 gallon drums filled with water. The wind was so strong it actually lifted the drums, which weighed approximately 500 lbs. each, turning them on their sides and spilling some of the water.

The Porter Fire Department responded and dismantled the alls of the tent to take away the “sail” effect then refilled the drums with water.

They secured the tent and prevented it from reaching the high voltage lines that were slightly higher and becoming a traffic hazard on the heavily traveled FM 1314.
