Cops Say He was “Hanging Out” – LITERALLY!

CLEVELAND, TX- Around 2 a.m. last Monday, Cleveland Police Officer Crowel responded to a suspicious person call in the 1300 block of Jefferson Avenue. While enroute, Dispatch notified Officer Crowel the suspect was attempting to open the home’s backdoor. What’s more, he was naked!

Officer Crowel arrived and went directly to the home’s unfenced backyard, where he saw a naked man “matching the given description” who, by then, had sat down on the home’s back porch. The Officer detained the suspect, 30-year-old Jonathan Garrett of Cleveland, and escorted him to the patrol vehicle.

The homeowner told police the trouble began around 11 p.m., when she allegedly heard someone knocking on her rear bedroom window. She then went to the backdoor and looked out, which is when she says she saw the suspect. At the point, the homeowner says Garrett was shirtless, but still wearing shorts, and was sweating profusely. She claims he asked for some water and to use a phone, saying he lived down the street and was locked out of his house. She says she gave him water and let him use the phone, but he was unable to get anyone to answer his calls. She thought the encounter was over when he walked away and left her yard, heading down the street.

Later on, the homeowner’s son, who lives with her, told her the man was knocking on his bedroom window, and he called 911. While the residents were on the phone with Dispatch, the man allegedly returned. This time, they say Garrett was completely naked, and paced back and forth in the backyard for a bit. The woman told police she saw Garett sit down on her porch and he was touching his genitalia.

Cleveland Police found a screen had been removed from a rear window at the home.

CPD arrested Garrett (probably saved time not patting him down) and transported him to the Cleveland Police Department Jail for booking. He was later transported to the Liberty County Jail in Liberty. (We need to follow up with Chief Broussard on the specific charges – seems like a few possibilities, but he’s apparently posted bond already, so we don’t have that part of the info as of this posting.)
