After months of Montgomery County Commissioners hearing complaints of new pet owners, volunteers and workers from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter the county took action to take it over. Last week the decision was made in Commissioners Court to take over the shelter and place it under Montgomery County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jim Clarks control. A search will start for a director. Between Monday’s meeting and Saturday morning, locks were changed, employees were interviewed and hired, vets were staffed and food was brought in. Cleaning started immediately and as the doors opened at 8am hundreds came in wanting to adopt. By 5 pm closing over 80 pets were adopted out. That almost matches the 100 which were taken in on Friday. For a $25 fee you can chose a pet and have it spayed or neutered,
Commissioner Clark said as he came in Saturday morning people were parking on SH 242 in driving rain. The parking situation will also be addressed as Clark visited with the neighbor of the shelter, land was loaned to the shelter for additional parking. Lighting for outside will be addressed to allow walking dogs after dark and for more security as volunteers and workers leave. Also an exhaust system which was already purchased and delivered will be installed right after January 1. This will allow fresh air to be circulated making a healthier environment for the animals. Due to the central air system being down for several days , it needed to be done when the animals could handle the temperatures.
Clark also thanked Judge Doyal and Commissioners, especially Commissioner Riley for getting on board and making the take over go smoothly.
In addition to bringing in employees and volunteers , one smiling face has returned. That was Minda who had been a part of the shelter for years and was called by many the go to girl. She was terminated under the former management.
The shelter will be open again on Sunday from 9-5 for $25 adoptions.
