CPD Traffic Stop Turns Yields Felony

CLEVELAND, TX- On Saturday, Cleveland Police Department Officers G. Hicks and C. Ortega were patrolling the 700 block of Newman St. when they saw a gray 2012 Chrysler 300 operating on the roadway with an expired registration tag, and failing to maintain a single lane of traffic.

The officers initiated a traffic stop on the Chrysler and asked the driver to exit the vehicle. They detained the driver, Marcus D. Hamilton.  A routine check showed the vehicle was uninsured. Hamilton was taken in custody for operating a vehicle without a vailed driver’s license, expired registration tag, and no liability insurance, aka failure to maintain financial responsibility.

While conducting an inventory of Hamilton’s vehicle, Officers allegedly found methamphetamine in plain view, in the front driver’s side door in a clear baggie. This added a drug possession charge to Hamilton’s troubles.

Officers transported Hamilton to Cleveland Police Department Jail for booking and to test the meth and weigh it on a digital scale. The approximate weight was 5.1 grams.

Marcus Dewayne Hamilton, 45, of Cleveland, was charged with second-degree felony Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 1/1-B, more than 4 grams but less than 200 grams. Judge Fuller set his bond at $30,000.
