Harris County Sheriff’s Office PIO Thomas Gilliland addressed the media on location at West Road and Telge in northwest Houston where an HCSO District 5 Deputy was murdered while on duty, but not on a call or traffic stop. Gilliland said the slain deputy was pumping gas into his patrol vehicle after responding to a call. The suspect approached him from the rear, without warning, and opened fire with a handgun, shooting the deputy in the back of the head. The wounded deputy fell to the ground, and the suspect approached and continued shooting him as he lay on the ground.
According to witnesses, the suspect did not say anything to the deputy, but simply opened fire. After shooting the deputy multiple times, the shooter got into his vehicle and sped away.
The suspect is described as a dark-skinned (likely black) male, 5’10 to 6 feet tall, short hair cut in a “fade”, wearing a white shirt and red shorts. He was driving a dark red or maroon Ford Ranger extended cab.
Gilliland had difficulty speaking, becoming choked up as he spoke of the savage ambush on a 10 year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
We will post additional details as they become available.
