Double Fatal Crash in Cleveland

LIBERTY COUNTY, TX- Just after 9 a.m. Friday, Cleveland Police responded to Hwy. 105 Bypass in reference to a major accident involving a white Ford F-150 pick-up, and a red Kenworth tractor-trailer. Witnesses said the F-150 was traveling east on the Hwy 105 Bypass an appeared to have tried to make a U-turn in front of the eastbound tractor-trailer. Cleveland Police officers and crash investigators are still investigating the crash.

It was initially reported the passenger was ejected from the pickup and was laying in the main lanes of traffic.  The driver of the F-150 was flown by air ambulance to a Houston area medical center.  The pickup’s passenger was 69-year-old John Eugene Wright, of Cleveland, who was pronounced dead on the scene by Liberty County Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller.  The driver of the tractor-trailer was very upset, but appeared uninjured and was walking around.

Around 4:30 p.m. Cleveland Police learned the driver of the F-150 had also succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as Lee Howard Ethridge, 75, of Cleveland.

“The Cleveland Police Department send our deepest sympathy and prayers to the families affected by this tragic accident,” Cleveland Police Chief Darrell Broussard said.
