A yet unidentified 18-year-old Charles Bender of Willis was flown to Hermann Hospital in Houston this morning after his Ford pickup which was westbound on FM 2432 left the roadway and crashed into the woods trapping him.
North Montgomery County firefighters went on the scene shortly after being dispatched and requested additional help and requested PHI Air Medical be activated.
The teen had been westbound when according to witnesses he ran off the right side of the roadway, traveled several hundred yards before hitting the culvert of an intersecting private road and going airborne. The vehicle, which has a Polaris four wheeler in the back landed on the opposite side of the private road and hit two pine trees. The four wheeler launched out of the rear and landed to the right front of the truck. Firefighters worked almost 30 minutes to free Bender. The front of the truck was completely destroyed. Bender was trapped with the dashboard and steering wheel and one of his feet had gone through the firewall.
He was removed and stabilized then flown to Houston.
DPS Troopers believe the Bender may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
