ORIGINAL STORY
Just before midnight Monday, August 21, 2023 911 calls began coming in in reference to a Mercedes that crashed into the woods at College Park and FM 1488. Callers stated the car exploded into a ball of flames and set the woods on fire. Woodlands and Needham Fire Department s were dispatched to the scene. Immediately on arrival additional brush trucks and pumpers were called for as the vehicle was fully involved as were the woods burning. A Woodland’s truck was able to hook to a fire hydrant and set the aerial up as flames were getting into the tree tops some sixty feet up. Firefighters extinguished the car fire and found a deceased 18-year-old male who resided in The Woodlands in the vehicle. The woods were brought under control a short time later. DPS Troopers investigated the crash as Montgomery County Deputies provided traffic control. Once the hose was picked up FM 1488 was reopened at about 1 am. A witness said the Mercedes passed him on College Park at an extremely high rate of speed. When the driver got to the intersection he saw what he believed was the Mercedes burning in the woods. DPS Troopers determined the vehicle came to the T intersection and drove straight off into the woods hitting the traffic control device pole and a utility pole before striking a tree deep in the woods some seven feet off the ground. Eickenhorst Funeral Directors responded to the scene and transported the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for identification and autopsy. Barsh Wrecker Service removed the vehicle from the scene. This has been the sixth fatal crash at this intersection this reporter has made since 2005. The intersection is well-illuminated and well-marked.
