DRIVER RUNS OFF CLIFF OF SAN JACINTO RIVER

Just after 1am Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office  received a call of a vehicle that had crashed. The caller stated they were in the vehicle and had just left a party. The three had been eastbound on SH242 between Interstate 45 and US59 and had turned on a side road . He stated the ran off the road into the trees and that one passenger had two broken legs. He also stated that they had been drinking. Dispatchers using GPS technology were able to track the cell phone to the bank of the San Jacinto River in a curve of Needham Road.

Needham Fire Department , Sheriff’s Office, DPS, and MCHD were all dispatched to the scene. When Needham Fire Department arrived they requested an additional unit to respond with a stokes basket. What they found was an SUV had missed a curve and ran off the road and down an incline towards the San Jacinto River. The only injury was the passenger who had broken both legs but on a previous occasion and not in the accident was was in extensive pain. Firefighters worked almost one hour removing him from the vehicle, stabilizing him and bringing him up the cliff. He was transported to Hermann Woodlands in stable condition. The driver of the vehicle was arrested by DPS after he failed the field sobriety tests and was taken for a mandatory blood draw. The other passenger who showed some signs of impairment was released.
