Drowned CHS grad recovered

The body of Conroe High School graduate and A&M student Charles Andrew “Chase” Bergfeld was recovered just after 2 p.m. on Thursday from Richland Chambers Lake in Corsicana.

Bergfeld, 23, disappeared into the waters last Friday after he and some friends were involved in a boating accident and forced to remain in the cold water for an extended period, according to officials.

Dive Master Vernon Miller, with the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Dive Team, said the recovery was made with the assistance of Humminbird sonar technology expert Dennis Watters. Along with his wife Tammy, Watters has been a crucial part of the recovery of scores of drowning victims and left Corsicana en route to another search, according to Miller.

Members of the Precinct 1 Dive Team, a volunteer group created by Miller and Precinct 1 Constable Don Chumley, also assisted in the search. They returned home earlier this week and Miller was prepared to rejoin the search effort as a diver on Friday. After the recovery, Miller expressed relief for the family’s sake.
