Just before 6 p.m. Saturday evening the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department received a call that two teens had drown in the Trinity River at the SH 105 bridge. First units on the the scene due to the language barrier the information was incorrect. A 51-year-old male was enjoying the afternoon with his family from out of town when he wandered off into the water walking under the bridge toward the opposite shore. As family members looked on he went down and never resurfaced. A 15-year-old member of the family then entered the water in an attempt to save him. He was unable to and returned to shore safely.
A DPS helicopter is assisting the Sheriff’s Office in addition to the Tarkington Fire Department, Hardin Fire Department, Liberty Fire Department. The Montgomery County Precinct 4 Dive Team was notified and will respond to the scene in the morning as with the currents it to too dangerous to dive after dark.
As of 9:30 p.m.the victim has not been recovered and the search will continue in the morning.
