DWI TASK FORCE TAKES SEVERAL OFF THE STREETS

At 7 p.m. Tuesday night the Montgomery County DWI Task Force went to work. This unit made up of DPS, Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Conroe Police and TABC spread out in teams of six men. Each of these teams had a list of clubs in the sector they were assigned.

The first step in the task force was to visit with establishment owners and give them literature on the law and selling to intoxicated persons.. This continued until later in the evening when they went back to establishments checking for compliance, checking ID’s for underage drinking and looking for overly intoxicated persons.

There was a short interruption in this when Conroe police spotted a suspicious vehicle in the city limits and determined it to be stolen from Houston. Conroe police initiated a pursuit at speeds up to 80 miles-per-hour south on Interstate 45. Little did this fleeing driver know there were multiple units south of him awaiting his arrival. At FM 1488 and again Woodlands Parkway units were able to deploy spikes. With the truck now running on two front flat tires he continued south at close to 45 miles-per-hour. As he approached Rayford Road he started driving on the left shoulder and stopped. At this point two males jumped out of the vehicle. Jumping over the median wall both sprinted across all lanes of traffic running east.

Deputies and Conroe Officers chased them on foot, one disappeared into the night but their primary target was the driver who was finally tackled on Briarhaven, one block east of Interstate 45.  The suspect told officers he knew the truck was stolen and that’s why he was wearing the latex gloves.

Once again the task force went back to work and at 2 a.m. as they checked one club they found several intoxicated individuals attempting to leave. One was taken into custody in the club. Others as they exited were asked who the driver was and given a field sobriety test. One such individual when asked told the trooper, “I am, I’m the dethisneted driver”. Knowing he was intoxicated he was told it may be a better idea to call a cab which they did.

Several cabs transported patrons as they left and seeing the officers thought better of getting behind the wheel.

Milstead wrecker was also on hand after a patron called Tipsy Tow which is sponsored through AAA. The program allows you to call them at which point they dispatch a wrecker to transport just the driver and his vehicle up to ten miles to his home.

Two others were also arrested at the club, one unable to walk and the second found so intoxicated that he was passed out in his truck behind the wheel.

Needless to say there was only one DWI accident last night. That was a minor accident near US 59 and Fostoria Road when an intoxicated driver ran into the rear of Constable Haydens sons truck.
