Erik Richenberger arrived in Canada Tuesday night and a not so happy camper. United Air Lines was to ship his bike to Canada. He checked it in when he arrived at the airport on Tuesday. He had taken all day Monday checking the bike out, packing all his gear for his ride on the bike so it fit just right. Made all the final adjustments on the bike and then packed it in a bicycle box.
When he arrived in Canada, United Airlines had handled the box so bad that it was half torn. One of the bags that had been mounted to the bike with his medical supplies and water purification tablets was gone, ripped away from the bike.
On top of that customs cut the box open, not on the top but on the bottom to where the box could not be carried by Erik once he arrived in Canada.
His brakes also had some damage, however his coach Billy Rice assisted him in repairs. He is ready for the starting line Friday at 8am Mountain Time.
His coach Billy Rice of Bryan will also be at the start line on a new tandem bicycle. Rice will wide the 2700 mile trip with his 16-year-old daughter. If they complete the race she will be the youngest ever to finish the Divide Race.
