HOUSTON, TX- U.S. Marshals apprehended escaped inmate McArthur Deashy Mathis at approximately 1:34 p.m. on Tuesday near Interstate 45 and West Road in Houston. Mathis had fled from the Cross Creek Psychiatric and Addiction Hospital in Austin, prompting a multi-agency manhunt.
The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders & Fugitive Task Force, working in collaboration with the Austin Police Department, the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, and investigators from the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), tracked and captured Mathis without incident.
Grimes County Sheriff’s Office personnel from the Investigation and Patrol Division are currently transporting Mathis back to the Grimes County Jail.
The GCSO credited the arrest to the coordinated and tireless efforts of all law enforcement agencies involved. Officials also expressed gratitude to media outlets in Austin, Houston, and surrounding areas for their comprehensive coverage of the escape.
“The public attention and the tips provided to local and regional Crime Stoppers programs played a crucial role in locating and capturing Mathis,” Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell said.
