FATAL CRASH AND FIRE CLOSES I-45 FOR 5 HOURS

At 11:15pm Thursday Conroe Police  were dispatched to a fatal crash involving two motor vehicles at 11790 N IH 45 North in the main lanes. A driver’s account and scene evidence were used for the preliminary investigation.  The driver of a 1995 Freightliner pulling a trailer, had been legally parked on the outside shoulder of the main lanes for about 5 minutes entering GPS data.  The deceased was driving a 1995 Ford Ranger northbound  on N. IH-45 and failed to maintain a single lane, entering the outside shoulder and striking the rear of the 18-wheeler trailer.  The Ranger  was caught under the rear of the trailer and caught fire while the driver was entrapped.  The driver of the 18-wheeler  unsuccessfully pulled his rig forward in an attempt to dislodge the burning vehicle.  Conroe Fire Department  arrived and extinguished the fire.  The driver of the Ranger was deceased at the scene.  Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Wayne  Mack held inquest at the scene and ordered an autopsy and transportation to the forensic center by Eickenhorst. Funeral Directors.

The freeway remained closed until 5am as police investigated the crash.

Identification is pending autopsy.
