Fatal crash in front of popular restaurant

CONROE- A two-vehicle crash around 6 p.m. Friday night in front of Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish in the 5900 block of West Davis left a woman dead and her husband critically injured.

Marcia Berg-Chandler, 61, was pronounced dead on the scene. Robert F. Chandler, 61, was transported by Life Flight air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston in critical condition. The couple’s home is in The Woodlands.

Traffic investigation officer Jeff Smith with the Conroe Police Department said Chandler, who was driving a 1995 Honda Accord westbound, attempted to turn left into the Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish parking lot and was struck by a 1999 Ford Econoline van.

“(The Honda) failed to yield right of way to the van,” Smith said. “The van struck the Accord on the front passenger side.”

Marcia Burg-Chandler was killed on impact, he said.

The 31-year-old male driver of the van and his 16-year-old male passenger were transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The van, a commercial vehicle, had the words “Servicemaster Clean Select” painted on the side.
The deceased woman was trapped inside the wreckage and the Conroe Fire Department extricated her and assisted investigators with lighting.

Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Trey Spikes conducted an inquest and did not order an autopsy.
Smith said neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be contributing factors and the most likely scenario was that Robert Chandler misjudged how long it would take him to cross the oncoming lanes of traffic into the parking lot.
