fatal crash in national forest

  1. Just after 8 pm Friday Eugene Gibson, 54 of Montgomery was southbound on FM 149 between FM 1791 and FM 1375 at a high rate of speed. With him was his passenger Mike Latyne, 45 also of Montgomery. As Gibson rounded a curve in his 1994 Geo Prizm, he left the roadway on the west side of the road striking a tree.
  2. Montgomery Fire Department was dispatched to the scene as was MCHD. PHI Air Medical was dispatched but when crews were able to remove Gibson from the twisted metal he went into traumatic arrest. Crews were unable to save him. Latyne was transported to the hospital in stable condition. He stated both had been drinking prior to the crash.
