At 10:33 pm, Caney Creek Fire was dispatched to a major accident with a rollover on SH 242 near Artavia. They arrived on the scene to find three injuries, one of which was very critical, with a nurse who was driving by administering CPR. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the 18-year-old to Memorial Hermann in the Woodlands. That male was pronounced deceased as he arrived. Two others, a 15-year-old and a 19-year-old, were also transported with critical injuries. According to witnesses, the Chevrolet passenger car was eastbound at a high rate of speed. After passing the light at Artavi, the driver locked the brakes, lost control, and went into the ditch. The vehicle hit a culvert pipe and began to roll. It flipped at least seven times. A husband and wife were traveling west on SH 242 and were almost struck by the flipping vehicle. The vehicle left several hundred yards of skid marks. Saddle Creek removed the vehicle from the scene. The road reopened at 1:30 am. The vehicle was occupied by three brothers who had spent the night at the movie theater.
