CONROE- A fiery crash in the 2100 block of Airport Road killed 44-year-old George Wilkerson of Conroe early Saturday. A passing motorist reported the fire, but did not witness the crash, police said.
Conroe Police Sgt. Jon Buckholtz said it was around 1:30 a.m. when officers were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle fire. Conroe Fire Department Engine 2 and Medic 11 also responded
“It was a single vehicle crash,” Buckholtz said. “A 2003 Dodge Durango was northbound on Airport Road and veered off the roadway and struck a culvert.”
The SUV traveled almost 300 feet from the road before impact with the culvert in front of the Accent Cabinet Company, he said
“The fire was after the point of impact and it burned the vehicle up completely,” Buckholtz said. “It was probably one of the most sever damage accidents I’ve seen in quite a while.”
The wreckage was so twisted that it took firefighters an extended period of time to extricate the victim.
Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Lanny Moriarty conducted an inquest and ordered the body transported to the Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Conroe for autopsy.
The Montgomery County Hospital District listed the time of death as 1:40 a.m.
