FIREFIGHTERS HAVE WALKER COUNTY FIRE CONTAINED

A wildfire that broke out this morning just before noon is now 100% contained. With an acreage of approximately 200 acres total that burned.

This morning Chief Mark Robinson of the Pine Prarie Fire Department spotted smoke just off FM 1696 about eight miles north of Huntsville. When he arrived the woods were heavily involved with fire moving quickly with the strong winds. Help was immediately called in from ten other departments and the Texas Forest Service. With the 44 firefighters and 15 trucks the battle lasted most of the day.

At one point the fire jumped a gravel road leading to the Ozarka Water Plant but was quickly stopped. The Forest Service had several bulldozers on stand-by in Huntsville as a wildfire staging area.

Six dozers from Huntsville and Lufkin responded in a very short time. In addition, two helicopters used to fight these fires were stationed just five miles down the road at Huntsville Airport and were on the scene in minutes.

There were no homes damaged. If the fire would have jumped the road and not been stopped several homes could have been threatened.

The cause has not been determined, However, officials say it is possible that lightning from the storms Monday night could have done it. All it would take is it hitting a tree and the tree smolder until the wind picked up and helped it along.

As of 9p.m., tonight firefighters remain on the scene to monitor the situation. They say smoke could last several weeks and the fire may not be completely extinguished for the same.
