This entire weekend the Tarkington Firefighters have been out on the road with a fill the bucke program to help out with department expenses. Unlike Montgomery County they do not have ESD’s and depend on fund raisers, grants and donations. With the drought here and all the grass fires it has taken its toll on their fuel budget, drinking water budget and repairs needed with their equipment running so many calls.
Besides fires in their district they assist other communities with fires and cover medical calls as first responders. Unlike some of the department here in Montgomery County, Tarkington is all volunteer. Many night they have been on the scene of a fire and prayed they would finish before dawn so they good go to their regular job.
As they were out today having some people pull to the intersection and not even say thanks guys but I am out of money this week, Many just kept looking straight ahead and ignored them . Many others graciously helped them out.
But according to Assistant Chief Dalton Gregory, today was a first. A driver pulled up to them, cussed them out and then before peeling out flipped them the middle finger.
What really upset them was the man who did it they recognized as a wheelchair bound man who several months ago the fire department was called out to his home to free his wheelchair after he got it stuck in the mud.
Their website shows many of the fires they have responded in the past.
