FOLKS-FIRETOWER AT SH 242 IS NOT A 4-WAY STOP-ONE INJURED IN CRASH

Friday afternoon, a driver of a Challenger was southbound on Fire Tower Road. Unfamiliar with the area. Since the new section of SH 242 was completed, yellow caution lights were placed for SH 242 traffic while flashing red on the Firetower side. Drivers on the Firetower side are unable to see the flashing, and drivers on the SH 242 side are unable to see the flashing red. As the Challenger driver stopped for the red, a westbound SH 242 vehicle stopped at the intersection even though it was flashing yellow. The Challenger driver, thinking it was a 4-way stop, proceeded into the intersection and was struck by a Dodge pickup pulling a loaded BBQ trailer and heading to an event in New Waverly. The driver of the Challenger was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The couple in the truck were uninjured. This has been the third such crash that MCPR has been on location for since Christmas. The first being the day of the tornado, as a police command post had been setup in the Exxon parking lot and was witnessed by several deputies. In addition, drivers on Firetower approaching the intersection have a blind area due to vegetation. DPS investigated the crash.
