Just before 11:30 p.m. on Friday, the Porter Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at the former Porter Disabled American Veterans Hall which is now a thrift center. When they arrived, fire was ascending through the roof and a second alarm was pulled. The blaze was eventually brought under control with no injuries. Porter was assisted by New Caney, Splendora, Caney Creek and Houston Fire Departments.
Porter Fire Chief Carter Johnson credited the local MUD for having good water pressure to supply the ladder truck. The fire was initially fought from outside because the roof was collapsing and was too dangerous to put firefighters inside.
The cause is under investigation by the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office.
