Karen Colson has been sentenced to four-years in the Texas Department of criminal Justice for Intoxicated Manslaughter .
On July 11, 2008 Tracey Cooley attempted to stop Colson from driving away after she was reported to have taken some medication. Colson struck him in the driveway of a home on West Memorial Drive in Porter. Once she struck him he became tangled under her Ford Taurus and she continued to try to drive off.
MCHD and Porter Fire Department responded to the scene and requested Life Flight. Cooley was flown to Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center where he died at 11:40 p.m. that same night.
According to Public Data Colson was arrested September 24, 2002, for driving while intoxicated and was given 180 days probation.
Originally charged with Murder it was later reduced to Intoxicated Manslaughter after it was discovered she was under the influence of Soma, prescribed by her doctor as a muscle relaxer but was over the normal prescribed amount.
Colson plead guilty to Intoxicated Manslaughter in July. She could have gotten up to twenty-years. However during sentencing The victims family testified they did not feel it was intentional that she ran him over.
She could have gotten up to twenty-years for the charge.
