CONROE- He may have felt cool driving home in his sports car with custom rims, but his feelings probably changed as he watched a wrecker load up his car from the back of a DPS patrol car.
Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper William Frederick was working traffic just before 8 p.m. Friday on FM 1488 when a 1999 Chevy Camaro driven by 25-year-old Brian David Smith of Conroe passed him at 81 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.
Frederick turned around and activated his emergency lights, but Smith kept going. He turned on Pin Oak, partially leaving the roadway during the fast turn and then he seemed to disappear, Frederick said.
The experienced highway patrolman felt certain the car was hidden somewhere off of that street with its lights off, so he slowly drove down the street checking driveways. Frederick almost reached the end of the road when he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the Camaro pull out of a driveway at the other end and flee toward FM 1488.
Frederick pursued Smith and saw the car run through a red light at Hwy 242 before turning north on Lake Lamond Rd. by cutting through a gravel area where he almost struck a group of people standing next to a pickup truck, Frederick said.
Smith continued northbound on Lake Lamond Rd. with Frederick still in pursuit, then turned on Sharyn Dr. and into Smith’s driveway, where he was arrested at gunpoint.
Frederick contacted the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office who seized* Smith’s vehicle.
Smith is charged with evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle and his bond is set at $1,500.
It was not Smith’s first encounter with law enforcement. Public Data shows Smith has a laundry list of charges and convictions, and some charges that were dismissed as well.
