At 11:45 pm Friday, July 15, 2022, as detectives worked the scene of the officer-involved shooting in Magnolia another call came in for a shooting just down the road. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Precinct 5 Constables responded to the scene. They arrived at Mike’s Grocery #5 in the 30200 block of SH 249 to find a white male deceased. A witness said an altercation outside the store and what they believed was a black male on a bicycle shot him. Units started to fan out and a short time later they were able to locate and detain the shooter. He is identified as Daniel David Joseph Ryan III,22, of 33202 Rolling Wood in Pinehurst. He has been charged with murder and remains in the Montgomery County Jail on a $150,000 bond. The victim Mitchell Weemes, of Magnolia, was the owner of the dogs that on June 20, 2022, attacked Rebecca Hatcher in the 37000 block of Pine Bark Lane in the Hazy Hollow Subdivision. Hatcher remains in the hospital and after seven surgeries have possibly many more to go. Weemes had appeared in Montgomery County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Court on June 29, 2022, at which time Judge Masden ordered the dogs put down. Investigators have not yet released a motive in the murder of Weemes. Ryan appeared in the 221st District Court on Tuesday and waived formal reading of the indictment and entered a plea of Not Guilty. He is being represented by Conroe Attorney Tay Bond. He is set to appear in court again on August 23, 2022. Ryan has been handled in Montgomery County before. In 2018 he was arrested by Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constables for failing to ID and given 18 days in the Montgomery County Jail. Harris County Precinct 4 arrested him in June of 2018 for evading arrest and detention and sentenced him to 6-days in the Harris County Jail. Then in April 2019, Magnolia Police arrested him for assault causing bodily injury. In that incident, he shot a person with a BB gun. He was given 20-days in the Montgomery County Jail on that charge. Also in October of 2019, he was arrested by Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for assault causing bodily injury to a family member when he hit and bit the victim. The Judge gave him 10-days for that incident. On January 30, 2021, DPS arrested Ryan on a charge of driving while intoxicated with an open container. He was sentenced to 3-days in the Montgomery County Jail for that offense. All of Ryan’s cases have been misdemeanors with no felony charges.

It’s been roughly 22 days and Rebecca is doing so much better. She is still going into surgery every other day to have her serious wounds cleaned out and if the doctors feel it’s safe to close particular wounds they will close them. Some wounds have to heal from the inside out. Rebecca is starting to get weaned off her trache and with hopes should begin advanced speech therapy soon. We got lucky today and got to witness her strength to get better by seeing her sitting up which the staff has been working on but in addition today is the first attempt to stand. Of course it was with support but she was proud of herself. Her face says otherwise because she was in a lot of pain while she was trying to stand but she was not going to let pain keep her from getting better. There is still no 100% knowledge on when she’ll be able to come home or what her future needs might be going forward. It’ll be up to all the amazing speech, pt and occupational therapist to evaluate what those suggestions might be. Rebecca does have a bacterial infection, we had to wear gloves and protective gowns when we were with her. Still trying to keep her calm by limiting visits for now.

Rebecca Hatcher of Magnolia remains in ICU at Memorial Hermann Woodlands after more than seven surgeries. This after she was walking near her home in the 37000 block of Pine Bark in the Hazy Hollow Subdivision when she was attacked on the road by three pit bulls and dragged into the ditch. The incident occurred just after 10:30 pm on June 20, 2022. Tammy Remey, a resident just down the street heard the screaming and came out to see what was happening. She realized it was down the street so got in her car and drove toward the source. She was met by the horrific sight of three pit bulls mauling a woman on the ground who at that point quit screaming and made Tammy believe she was dead. Tammy called 911 and tried to get a friend down the street to help. He wasn’t home so she returned seconds later as 911 told her not to exit the vehicle. The dogs ran off. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene as did Magnolia Fire Department and MCHD. Rebecca was extremely critical as she was transported to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands. There she immediately went into surgery. Montgomery County Animal Control was alerted as was Montgomery County Precinct 2 Constables Animal Cruelty Division. Animal Control was able to locate the dogs and take them into custody. One of the dogs was in such bad shape with a large unrelated gash to his leg that Montgomery County Vets had to do surgery on it. Wednesday morning the owner of the dogs, Mitchell Weemes appeared in the Montgomery County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Matt Masden’s Courtroom. The reason was to determine if the dogs should be put down. After hearing both sides and the investigator’s statement the dogs were ordered destroyed. Weemes broke down asking the Judge to see his dogs. Masden told Animal Control to give him 48 hours to do so before the dogs were destroyed. Weems told the judge that he had paid a friend to watch the three dogs. The friend resided across the street from the witness. The rear of the house is fenced but not the front. Even today as investigators were in the area residents’ and dogs were running after people down the street. Investigator Toby McLaughlan with Precinct 2 Animal Cruelty stated dogs were running all over the neighborhood and animal control was unable to round up all the dogs due to some staffing shortages, and an entire county to handle. Also if they arrive and the dog has already retreated to the owner’s property they are unable to cite or capture the animal. He stated residents needed to use caution while walking in the neighborhood. Chris Hatcher, Rebecca Hatcher’s brother said he was able to communicate with Rebecca using a notepad yesterday. She is still on a ventilator and feeding tube as the damage was also done to her trachea. Today Tammy showed us the location which was just feet from Rebecca’s driveway. Blood and human hair could be seen in the ditch. Tammy said when she first saw her that she was on the road and the dogs dragged her into the ditch. The family wished to share the photos to show dog owners just how bad an injury can be with dogs not secured. My parents are in their mid-seventies and have been dealing with my father battling cancer for the last two years, caring for my brother, who is disabled, and raising my nephew.
