Grimes County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Scam

RE: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT – TELEPHONE SCAM ALERT
The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn its citizens of a recent telephone scam involving individuals posing as representatives of the National Publishers Clearinghouse.
The Sheriff’s Office has recently received reports that an unknown individual had contacted them by telephone and stated that they had won the publishers clearinghouse sweepstakes.
The caller had further advised that in order to receive a free vehicle and a large sum of money they would need to go to a local store and obtain an Amazon card or similar gift card for the reported amount between $25.00 to $100.00 and provide this card information over the phone to later receive the above prizes.
The Sheriff’s Office urges its citizens to not give out personal information or follow instructions of the caller in order to fall victim of this scam. It is important to always verify the caller’s identity and confirm a validity of the reason for contacting you.
The majority of the time, These callers contact citizens from a “spoof telephone” number which could appear as a local telephone number. These numbers are commonly non-returnable for additional contact.
If you have any additional questions or concerns concerning this matter, please contact the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office at (936) 873-2151 or the Navasota Police Department at (936) 825-6410. 24 Hour
