As high winds woke people close to 5:00 this morning with the smell of smoke the rains came in behind it. Firefighters are still on the scene battling the blazes. They are hoping the rain will slow the progress and also help cool the hot spots.
After riding through the area yesterday the area looks like a bomb went off. Trees are just blackened sticks, homes totally destroyed. Some homes not even damaged. Power poles lay on the ground burned as crews replace them.
Sheriff Don Sowell, who has been a lawman for close to 40 years said he had never seen anything like it. He did note that with all the damaged and destroyed homes the American flags remained. One was burned, another not even touched and yet another on a wooden post stood as the fence posts next to it were burned away from the ground.
One large home was totally destroyed, a car in the garage. Around the home was a good fire break including sprinklers with hoses stretched across the yard and green grass.
