Head-on collision shuts down FM 1314

EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY- A head-on collision on FM 1314 near Timberland on Wednesday afternoon left a Baytown man in critical condition and injured a Conroe man.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Eric Lopez said the accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a southbound Volkswagen Jetta crossed to the wrong side of the road for unknown reasons and struck a City of Humble Water Department Chevy pickup head-on. Lopez said the Jetta was not passing another vehicle.

The driver of the Jetta, 41-year-old Gary Spratley of Baytown, was trapped in the wreckage. Porter and New Caney firefighters responded and extricated Spratley who was in critical condition with head injuries. A Life Flight medical helicopter transported him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Thomas Hosler, 40, of Conroe was driving the pickup. He sustained non-life threatening injuries and Montgomery County EMS transported him by ground ambulance to Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands.

The accident happened in an area of FM 1314 that was narrowed to two lanes because of construction. The road was closed for almost two hours.
