DPS is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three people early Sunday morning on a stretch of the Grand Parkway near Dayton. The head-on collision occurred around 3 a.m., May 4, between FM 1960 and County Road 686, when a northbound 2024 GMC Sierra crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2018 Nissan Altima, according to Sgt. Rob Willoughby with the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The driver of the Sierra, identified as Ulises Alejandro Guzman, 19, of Cleveland, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Altima, a 52-year-old man from Honduras, and his passenger, a 48-year-old woman from the Humble area, also died on impact. Justice of the Peace Larry Wilburn responded to the scene and ordered autopsies for both drivers. The names of the Altima’s occupants are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Troopers are working to locate family members of the man from Honduras, Willoughby said. Guzman had reportedly been returning home from a party at the time of the crash, while the Altima’s occupants appeared to be heading to Dayton. Texas DPS Trooper Jacques Nguyen is leading the crash investigation, with assistance from Willoughby. The roadway was shut down for approximately three hours as authorities processed the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
