Heat Advisory and Flood Warning Issued for Storm Ravaged Southeast Texas

On Thursday morning, the National Weather Service Houston / Galveston issued a new Heat Advisory and a new Flood Warning. Both affect many of the areas already impacted by Beryl where residents are without power.

…HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CDT THIS EVENING…

* WHAT…Heat index values up to 105.

* WHERE…Portions of south central and southeast Texas.

* WHEN…Until 8 PM CDT this evening.

* IMPACTS…Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Hurricane Beryl has left millions across Southeast Texas without power and without access to proper cooling. Residents without power should be mindful of the heat and take precautions now.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

…The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston TX has issued a Flood Warning for the following rivers in Texas…

East Fork San Jacinto near New Caney affecting Harris, Liberty and Montgomery Counties.

For the East Fork San Jacinto River…including New Caney, Cleveland…Minor flooding is forecast.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas.

…FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT TO LATE SATURDAY EVENING…

* WHAT…Minor flooding is forecast.

* WHERE…East Fork San Jacinto near New Caney.

* WHEN…From late tonight to late Saturday evening.

* IMPACTS…At 58.0 feet, Minor lowland flooding begins in the vicinity of the gage with minor roads such as Chinquapin and Riverside Roads beginning to flood.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…
– At 9:00 AM CDT Thursday the stage was 53.7 feet.
– Bankfull Stage is 54.50.
– Forecast…The river is expected to rise above flood stage just after midnight tonight to a crest of 58.4 feet late tomorrow morning. It will then fall below flood stage late
Saturday morning.
– Flood stage is 58.0 feet.
– Flood History…This crest compares to a previous crest of 58.4 feet on 12/21/1995.
