HOME OWNER DESTROYS HOME

At 10:44 am Tuesday Montgomery Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire in the 20300 block of FM 1791 in Richards. They arrived on the scene with a home fully involved and power lines down. Additional tankers were called in including those from Richards Volunteer Fire Department. Once the fire was extinguished the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office began their investigation. They quickly determined the fire was set by the homeowner, 69-year-old Linda Burdaux McCormick. According to Montgomery County Fire Marshal Jimmy Williams, they have not yet determined a motive. McCormick was arrested and is now in the Montgomery County Jail charged with arson. Her bond was set at $50,000.

Agreed…….if it was her home that she solely owned then a charge of arson is BS. Now, I could see charges from breaking burn regulations if they apply, insurance fraud if that’s the case and even restitution to the Fire Dept. for time and money spent.

I always wondered if its your own home that you solely own, how is it arson? Shouldn’t you be able to do whatever you want with it? I could understand being charged with an illegal burn or whatever.

So where it the threshold of it being a major crime? What if it was a house that needed to be torn down? What if it’s a storage shed you don’t want anymore? What about a doghouse you throw on the burn pile?
