lightning Possible Cause of House Fire

Heidi Bullard was in the bedroom of her home on Anglers Way in the Old Mill Lake Subdivision off FM 149 during the height of the storm that hit southeast Texas on Wednesday when she heard a loud bang and felt an electrical sort of shock that came through her fireplace. At first she didn’t believe lightning hit her home because it was not that loud, she said. Immediately calling her husband Chad at work, Bullard said she did not smell any smoke or see anything happening. Twenty minutes later, her husband received another call. Their two-story home was on fire.

Magnolia Fire Department arrived on the scene with heavy fire in the attic and the second floor. A second alarm was called for, and Needham Road and Tomball Fire Departments responded.

Most of the fire damage was in the attic area, some damage occurred to a second story room. Water damage and smoke damage was moderate on the first floor.

As of this writing, Investigator Jeff Williams with the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office said he has yet to determine the cause of the fire. There was no apparent damage to the outside of the home. A neighbor said she had seen lightning hitting the lake behind the Bullard’s home several times over the years. Williams said it is not uncommon for a charge from lightning to travel through an irrigation line, metal fence or even a gas line.
