Judge Doyal announces hiring of new Director of Purchasing to guide department

County Judge Craig Doyal announced Tuesday that the county has hired a new Director of Purchasing, Gilbert Jalomo, currently Purchasing Agent for Fort Bend County.
“I am extremely pleased that we are able to bring Gilbert Jalomo on board as our new Director of Purchasing,” Judge Doyal said.
“Mr. Jalomo’s long tenure as a purchasing agent, his leadership in that profession, and his wealth of knowledge and expertise make him the ideal candidate to lead our Purchasing Department into a new era of professionalism and integrity. I have had the opportunity close up to see Mr. Jalomo in action and have always been impressed by his leadership qualities.”
Jalomo has been Fort Bend County Purchasing Agent since April 1993. He has served there on numerous committees including one to develop a new county ERP software system, a task Montgomery County is currently pursuing.
Jalomo has numerous certifications, including Certified Professional Public Buyer. He is a member of the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP), and charter member and past president of the local NIGP chapter and Southeast Texas Association of Public Purchasing. He has served as logistics chief for Fort Bend County’s Emergency Response Team for Fort Bend County emergencies, including the Memorial Day and Tax Day Floods last year. He also was appointed by Gov. George W. Bush to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection from 1998 to 2000.
In 2015, Judge Doyal retained Jalomo for a period of time as a consultant to review operations of the Montgomery County Purchasing Office.
More recently, the judge invited Jalomo to again serve as a consultant to interview candidates to fill the job of Director of Purchasing, vacated last December by the retirement of Darlou Zenor.
Judge Doyal and a small committee interviewed several candidates for the position, assisted by Jalomo, and presented four candidates to county commissioners to interview in executive session.
As part of those final interviews, county commissioners as a whole were impressed with Jalomo, and expressed an interest in hiring him for the position. Jalomo stated his desire to be considered, and as a result, Judge Doyal worked with Jalomo to negotiate his employment. Commissioners unanimously approved the hiring and Jalomo’s salary at Commissioners Court on Tuesday, May 23.
Jalomo will start work July 17.
