Old Cell Phones Disrupting 911 Services
It has become common for parents to pass down their old cell phones that are no longer in service to their children for recreational use. Often smart phones are used by kids to play games/listen to music and parents don’t mind because the phone is no longer valid.
The Cleveland Police Department wants parents to know that even though these phones do not have service, they are still able to contact 911 as long as the phone has power.
The Police Department has seen a trend in the past few years of children contacting 911 and not realizing they were able to do so with these out of service phones. The Police Department is becoming inundated with these types of 911 calls which are affecting emergency services.
The Cleveland Police Department is asking the help of citizens to educate children about the use of 911. Please help us to get the word out and let everyone know that older phones which are out of service still has the ability to contact 911. Children need to be properly instructed in the use of 911 before passing down these out of service phones.
