LCSO Announces “Contraband Detection Device”

LIBERTY COUNTY — Recently a new high tech investigative tool was added to the Liberty County Sheriff Departments illegal drug trafficking arsenal to combat such activities through the roads and highways of our community. The photo depicts Sheriff Bobby Rader and a Sergeant from the departments drug enforcement division demonstrating the method in which this new “ Contraband Detection Device K910B “ is used.

This device will greatly reduce the time a Deputy must spend on a road side stop checking for possible hidden compartments and/or drugs or money hidden behind wheel wells, in tires, under the floor boards or many other areas within the body of an automobile where such contraband can be hidden from immediate view. By knowing, for example, that the usual density of vehicle fenders range from approximately 25 to 30 density reading, then anything greatly above that reading would indicate some type of object or items within the fender causing a much higher reading and therefore, cause for suspicion. The same indicators would be true for the density of vehicle tires and other areas of a vehicles body structure.

Ironically, it is confiscated illegal drug monies awarded to the Sheriff’s Department and other agencies, by the courts, that provides the funds to purchase such devices as this. In this particular case, District Attorney Logan Picket’s office provided the $18,000 to the Sheriff’s Department from their portion of confiscated drug monies to buy this device.

Sheriff Rader feels the addition of this detection device will not only reduce the man hours it will take on a suspected drug stop by the drug enforcement division but it will also be much more efficient in the road side searches of vehicles in detecting the many hiding places in a vehicle that drug traffickers seek to hide their drug money and illegal drug loads.
