Liberty County– At approximately 10:02 a.m. Tuesday, Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Dunn was dispatched to what was reported to be an “Auto/Pedestrian” accident on SH1409 just North of CR 456 in South Liberty County.
The initial investigation indicated that a passing citizen noticed a bicycle with heavy damage to the rear wheel lying on the South bound side of SH1409. The citizen turned around and found a man lying in the road side ditch approximately 25 feet from the bicycle. The injured man, described as a white male in his fifties, appeared to be non-responsive.
SH1409 was completely closed in both directions as DPS conducted the on-scene investigation.
Liberty County EMS was notified and en route, as was a Life Flight air ambulance, but Life Flight was later canceled. Shortly thereafter, Pct. 4, Justice of the Peace Barry Graves was called to the scene, where he conducted an inquest and pronounced the victim as deceased. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
At the time of this writing, it is unknown as to how long the victim had been in the ditch before being found or if there were any witnesses to the “hit and run” accident.
The Department of Public Safety in continuing their investigation.
