As approximately 7:20am today, Investigators with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office responded to an early morning shooting of a resident on CR 2005 in north Liberty County. According to lead Investigator Sgt. Josh Cummins, Melvin Allen Penton, age 45, was evidently at his home when an unknown male shot him in the back upper portion of his shoulder with what is thought to be an unknown caliber hand gun.
After being shot, Penton ran to the next door neighbor’s home where the neighbor called 911 and Deputies responded. Life Flight was called to the scene and Penton was transported to a Houston hospital with what is thought to be a non-life threatening gun-shot wound.
According to Sgt. Cummins, Investigators have detained an unnamed person of interest but they are still trying to unravel conflicting statements of exactly what prompted the shooting or who the shooter actually may be. At this early stage of the investigation which is still underway, no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.
