Man Clings to Life After Shooting

Liberty County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to a shooting at #684 CR 460 at about 6:15 a.m. this morning in south Liberty County. Upon their arrival they found Victor Robert Pereida, age 50 years old suffering from five gunshot wounds to his body. Sgt. Bubba Pearson stated that from witness accounts, Marshal Gerald Coffin, age unknown was the shooter but had fled the scene prior to the arrival of Deputies and his whereabouts are still unknown at this time. Pereida was airlifted by Life Flight to Herman hospital in Houston and after surgery is presently in ICU in critical condition.

According to lead Investigator Sgt. Paul Lasco the information he has been able to gain at this point from witnesses appears to be that Victor Pereida lives at the CR 460 address with Bernadette Ochoa and Pereida works the night shift. It was reported that when Pereida pulled into his drive way this morning from work, Coffin came from around the house and confronted Pereida about his relationship with Bernadette Ochoa. Then at some point, Coffin is alleged to have pulled a 380 automatic and shot Pereida five time, striking him four times in the torso and once in the leg. It was at this point, Coffin fled the scene but it is unknown if on foot or in a vehicle.

Based upon witness accounts and also the apparent relationship between Marshal Coffin and Ms. Ochoa, a charge of Aggravated Assault Date/family/house with a Deadly Weapon was filed out of Judge Stephen Hebert’s JP court on Marshal Coffin. Information gained indicates that Coffin lives at 7147 Hwy. 90, Dayton, Texas and drives a 1998 Ford Ranger pick-up truck, gold in color, Texas license number AP8 0494.

Sgt. Lasco stated the investigation is continuing and request that if anyone has information on the whereabouts of Marshal Gerald Coffin to call the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at (936) 336-4500 and provide that information to him.
