On September 25, 2025, Judge Patty Maginnis of the 435th District Court sentenced 34-
year-old Joshua Andru Perkins to life in prison on charges related to the death of his
girlfriend, 20-year-old Jada Loggins. The day before, a Montgomery County jury found
Perkins guilty of Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury with a Deadly Weapon
Weapon, Family Violence, a first-degree felony. Prosecutors pursued this charge because
it carried the same punishment range as murder, ensuring the maximum accountability
for Perkins. Chief Prosecutor Brittany Hansford and Assistant District Attorney Mary
Garcia led the case on behalf of the State.
On February 11, 2023, Perkins violently assaulted his girlfriend inside their home.
Instead of immediately seeking help, he texted a friend saying, “Bro, I just fought her
again.” He waited a full 30 minutes to call 911, nearly 15 minutes of which he was on a
FaceTime call with a friend. When he finally spoke with emergency dispatchers, Perkins
lied about his name and falsely claimed that Loggins had fallen. First responders arrived
to find Jada unresponsive, pulseless, and breathless. Despite lifesaving measures that
restored a heartbeat, she was declared brain dead two days later due to severe blunt force
trauma that caused a large subdural bleed and swelling.
Evidence at trial showed that Perkins attempted to cover up his crime by deleting
incriminating text messages and instructing his friend to deny their communication.
Jurors also heard testimony that this was not the first time Perkins had been violent with
Jada—in their six-month relationship, she endured multiple incidents of abuse. Jada
leaves behind a young child.
During the punishment phase, prosecutors presented further evidence of Perkins’ violent
history. He had previously abused three other women and assaulted a man who attempted
to intervene when Perkins attacked Jada on an earlier occasion. Judge Maginnis, citing
the severity and repeated nature of his violence, sentenced Perkins to life in prison.
The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office remains steadfast in its mission to
protect victims of domestic violence and hold offenders accountable.
Chief Prosecutor Brittany
Hansford: “Jada cannot speak
for herself, but this life sentence
speaks on her behalf. It says her
Life mattered, her suffering
mattered, and that the violence
she endured and will not be forgotten
or excused. She deserved love
and safety, not abuse and
deception, and this sentence is
justice for her, for her child, and
for the family who now carries
the weight of this tragic loss.”
District Attorney Brett Ligon:
“Jada’s story is a tragic reminder
of that reality. In Montgomery
County, we will continue to fight
for victims, hold abusers
accountable, and make it clear
that violence in the home will
never be tolerated.”
