MAN KILLED AS HE CHANGED TIRE ON FREEWAY

At about 7:15 pm Sunday night DPS and Porter Fire responded to a major accident in the southbound lanes of I-69 just north of FM 1314. Callers were telling dispatch a male was under the vehicle. Porter Fire arrived and along with MCHD started CPR on the person who had already been removed from under a Cadillac Escalade. He was transported to Kingwood Hospital. DPS is investigating the crash in which a young female driving the Escalade had a flat tire and pulled to the inside shoulder of the freeway. She called her father who arrived in a Chevrolet Avalanche and stopped behind her. The victim had the vehicle on the jack and the tire removed. An older male driving a Ford Expedition clipped the Avalanche on the right rear and then struck the motorist changing the tire. The driver who lost total control of the Expedition continued almost a half-mile before he was able to get the vehicle to the right shoulder. The left front wheel assembly along with brakes had been ripped off the vehicle in the crash. The driver of the Expedition showed no signs of impairment. The crash cleared at 9 pm. Law Enforcement suggests if you have a flat do not go to an inside shoulder but pull to the right or exit the freeway completely. A rim and tire may be several hundred dollars and can be replaced, a life cannot be.
