RE: Hurricane Harvey Makes Landfall / Apartment Fire in Conroe
Hurricane Harvey has made landfall, moving slowly northwest and has weakened to a category 1 hurricane. Tropical storm force winds are still occurring along the southeast Texas coast and gusts to tropical storm force are occurring inland in rainbands.
Heavy rains and rising water levels are expected for the City of Conroe and surrounding region. Flooding is likely and a flash flood warning is in effect for residents of Conroe.
Be advised appropriate precautions should be taken. Minor flooding has already occurred on many roadways and the City of Conroe is encouraging Citizens to stay where they are until it is safe or if you know your home is prone to flooding, move now to a safe place.
“City crews are standing-by as the rain is expected to intensify over the next few days. Flooding is likely to occur as bands of the hurricane continue to move across the area. The City of Conroe Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated as a precautionary measure.” said Mayor Toby Powell. A disaster declaration was released on August 25, 2017 as the storm was strengthening in the gulf.
A 2 alarm fire occurred at 3:38am at the corner of Frazier and Mill St. The fire involved 2-3 structures and was under control by 4:35am. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a back injury and is expected to make a full recovery. Five people were displaced and being taken care of by Red Cross officials. The fire does not seem to be related to the storm.
The City of Conroe would like to offer the following safety tip:
Turn Around Don’t Drown. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.
