MESSAGE TO PARENTS OF CANEY CREEK

November 8, 2013
Dear Parent:
The safety of our students and staff is our first and highest priority. I would like to take this opportunity to address several rumors, most of which were fueled by social media. Social media presents a challenge with rumors, so please allow me to clarify the events of this week and ask your assistance in moving forward.
During this week we had an altercation between two students on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Based on the facts of each case, all five incidents appear to be totally unrelated.
On Thursday evening, I started hearing rumors about a possible weapon coming to school. On Friday morning, I sent a message explaining that we were investigating all rumors reported to us. I also explained that we had additional officers on campus as a precaution, which is standard practice in Conroe ISD. As we investigated, we continued to have several rumors circulating through social media about the possibility of more fights and possible weapons coming to school.
Two students posted Facebook comments that were highly disrupted to the school day. Both students received discipline. Another rumor that circulated was that if there were nine fights in a week, we would dismiss school. That is false. Student safety and maintaining a productive learning environment is our priority.
There was a rumor that a student saw a handgun, but when the student was addressed, the student said she did not see a handgun, she saw a duct-taped stick. While investigating her report, two male students were found to be in possession of what might be described as small home-made clubs (duct-taped sticks). These students were arrested and will be disciplined accordingly.
Out of abundance of caution, throughout next week, we will have extra police, our portable metal detectors, and additional hallway supervision. We will continue to investigate any credible reports.
Please help us in moving forward the following ways:
Know that the safety of your child is our priority and we take all potential threats seriously.
Know that we have an outstanding staff and student body.
3. We spent a lot of time on Friday chasing information with no real witnesses. Please do not add to or allow your child to add to the rumors, but do report factual or suspicious behaviors and concerns.
Monitor your child’s use of social media.
Know that at some point when students see their peers checking out of school, that leads to more students texting and calling their parents so that they can go home.
Make sure our registrar has an updated phone number and e-mail so that we can contact you quickly.
Know that the use of electronic devices at school is a privilege, and if students cannot use them responsibly, we will revise our policy for the use of such devices.
As a reminder, if you hear or witness anything that could compromise campus safety and security, 1-888-KID-CHAT is available for anonymous reporting.
Lastly, I do want to comment on the majority of our students’ behavior throughout the day. We have great students at CCHS, and with your assistance, we can continue to provide our students a quality education in a safe environment.
Sincerely,
Patricia McClure
Principal
