On Monday shortly after 4 p.m., New Caney Fire Department and Splendora police were dispatched to an accident where 63-year-old John Russell Wiggins of Splendora was trapped inside his Dodge truck that had struck a culvert and flipped. Medics arrived and called for air medical, but Wiggins was pronounced dead at 4:23 p.m. A witness said she was traveling southbound on the feeder when Wiggins’ truck began to flip.
The accident took place on the southbound feeder of US 59 between East River and FM 2090.
According to DPS Troopers, the truck left the roadway, struck a culvert, and began flipping. At one point, it started a grass fire.
Justice of the Peace James Metts ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for an autopsy.
It is believed Wiggins may have had a medical condition.
Those who exited through the grass to avoid the heavy traffic around the scene were issued a citation by Splendora police.
