Thursday night Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle and his Command Staff visited with the Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constables Office Citizens Academy Class. The purpose was to introduce himself and update them on some of the accomplishments of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office since he took office on January 1, 2025.
Some of those included changing some phone numbers. Now, when citizens who need a deputy to respond, they can call the new non-emergency number, (936-538-5900), it goes right to dispatch. For calls for other divisions including the jail, detectives, a separate number is used. All dispatch and 911 operator positions have been filled. Last year MCSO took over 379,000 calls, 211,000 of those were 911 calls. So far this year call volume continues to increase. Just last month over 24,000 calls came in of which over 14,000 were 911 calls.
Twice since January, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards has traveled to Montgomery County to inspect the jail. Both times they passed with a Commission member commenting on how much cleaner the jail is compared to prior year visits. He did comment as to the need for a larger jail as the population of the county steadily increases. In 2024 the Sheriff’s Office responded to over 273,000 calls. Of those, over 58,000 were traffic stops, almost 9,000 arrests, including 3800 warrant arrests and 1049 DWI arrests. However, they did find a way to add almost 70 additional beds to the facility.
Currently MCSO has 1059 employees, of which 585 are commissioned deputies and jailers. His yearly budget is over $100 million. He has trimmed training costs after learning outside instructors were coming in and being paid to instruct academy classes. Now the instructors are within the department. In addition, he has streamlined the hiring process by pushing for faster background checks on new hires.
He is also working hard to expand traffic enforcement and accident prevention on Montgomery County Roads.
Before supervisors at night were all sergeants. Commissioners now approved the implementation of two Lieutenants and a Captain to work nights. He has also revamped the Inmate Litter Program
Unlike the prior Sheriff, it is not uncommon to see Sheriff Doolittle out and about with the deputies and responding to scenes.
