Periods of heavy rainfall are expected Sunday into Monday with the potential for isolated flash flooding and additional rises on area rivers/creeks/bayous. Some storms will have the potential to become strong to severe.
A Flood Watch has been issued for Madison, Houston, Trinity, Polk, San Jacinto, and Walker counties for Sunday morning through Monday morning.
Risk for excessive rainfall has been upgraded to moderate (level 3 out of 4) for Houston County on Sunday.
Slight risk for severe weather (level 2 out of 5) added for Sunday and Monday for portions of Southeast TX.
Overview
Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday into Monday as upper level disturbances push through Southeast TX. With the additional rounds of heavy rainfall expected through Monday, a Flood Watch has been issued for Madison, Houston, Trinity, Polk, San Jacinto, and Walker counties and will be in effect from 7am CDT Sunday through 7am CDT Monday. The Flood Watch may need to be expanded to additional counties and/or extended in time as the event unfolds. At this time, estimated rainfall totals from Sunday into Monday evening are 2 to 4 inches with isolated higher amounts mainly north of I-10 and 1 to 2 inches with isolated higher amounts elsewhere. WPC’s Excessive Rainfall Outlook for Sunday/Sunday Night has a Moderate Risk (level 3 of 4) for Houston County, a Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) for most areas north of I-10, and a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4) elsewhere. A Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) was placed for areas southeast of the Brazos Valley for Monday and a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4) elsewhere.
There is also the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. Although conditions are less likely for tornadoes, a brief tornado or two cannot be ruled out. SPC has placed a Slight Risk for severe weather (level 2 of 5) along a line north of northeast Washington County into Polk County for Sunday/Sunday night and a Slight Risk for all of Southeast TX on Monday.
