MOTORCYCLE CRASH ON IH-45 INVESTIGATED

DPS finished the first part of their investigation into the Friday night motorcycle crash at the county line. Just after 10:30 Friday night North Montgomery County and New Waverly fire departments were dispatched along with DPS and MCHD to the Montgomery/Walker County line for a motorcycle crash.

The investigation showed that construction was going on in the median of Interstate 45 between Shepherd Hill and the County line. A 18-wheeler Kenworth dump truck was northbound in the left lane. A Harley Davidson motorcycle was also northbound .

As the truck driver approached the construction area he slowed down with his left turn signal going. Sign are posted for motorists to be aware of trucks entering and leaving the median in this manner.

The motorcycle which was behind the dump truck failed to slow down. As the cyclist swerved to avoid impact he struck the right rear tires of the truck. The front wheel of the motorcycle was broken off as the bike and rider crossed the county-line and ended up in the grassy median.

The rider who has not yet been identified had severe facial trauma and a compound femur fracture. PHI Air Medical was on the scene within minute. Landing at the weight station where the ambulance met them with the patient.

DPS License and Weight units also responded to the scene to inspect the truck which was found safe to operate.

The driver has been identified as Bruce W. Canfield of New Waverly.
