A Dallas Police Officer was killed by a suspected drunk driver Saturday as he escorted the body of a fellow Dallas Police Officer.

Sr. Cpl. Earl Jamie Givens served as a motorcycle patrol officer for the last 12 years of his 32-year career with DPD. He was providing a courtesy funeral escort for DPD Officer Tyron Andrews who died from cancer. According to Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall, Givens was stopped, blocking the entrance ramp to Interstate 20 with emergency lights activated when a Kia Sportage struck him at a high rate of speed.

Givens was transported to Baylor University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The uninjured 25-year-old driver of the Kia Sportage was taken into custody.
